Restrooms reflect a facility’s overall quality. Maintaining pristine environments can be challenging, but smart restrooms offer a promising path forward, combining data analytics and automation to maintain quality while reducing unnecessary labor hours.

While results vary by facility, facilities that adopt smart restroom solutions often report significant efficiency gains – in some cases up to 80%.

At one ESFM-managed life sciences client facility, approximately 360 annual labor hours were reallocated after implementing smart restroom technology. Guests noticed the difference, with higher satisfaction scores and better service delivery, thanks to janitorial team members having more time to address priority areas and unplanned needs.

But not all smart restroom solutions are created equal and choosing the right data strategy starts with understanding the available options: QR codes and sensors.

In an article for Cleaning & Maintenance Management, ESFM National Director of Hospitality & Cleaning Programs Kalli Folk shared insights on how to choose the best smart restroom solution based on factors like cost, technical complexity and facility needs. While the ideal choice depends on operational priorities, the effectiveness of any smart restroom technology ultimately comes down to how well it’s applied.

“Whatever smart restroom application you go with, the key to success is to remember to act on the data collected. Smart restrooms are not just about efficiency; they’re about creating cleaner, more responsive, more enjoyable environment for everyone who uses your space.” – Kalli Folk, ESFM National Director of Hospitality & Cleaning Programs
