Emphasizing Grounds Crew Safety

July 24, 2025

First impressions matter, and for facilities, that starts with the grounds. But behind every well-kept landscape is a team navigating real risks, from natural hazards to power tools. That’s why safety is more than a priority for ESFM, it’s a standard.

In a recent FacilitiesNet article series, ESFM National Director of Environment, Health & Safety Rusti Dyals emphasized the importance of proactive risk management. Every task must begin with a risk assessment to establish how to do the job in a safe manner every time.

Dyals shared best practices for safety success:

  • Daily huddles that include a “safety moment” keep teams aligned and alert.
  • Situational awareness to combat complacency.
  • Pre-task risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards
  • Ongoing training and education to keep safety top of mind.

“Safety is not a one-time checklist but should be an ongoing conversation,” Dyals said.
